Engineering

Life Sciences

Geopolitik

Note

4. Exzellente Karrierechancen

Conclusion

The post Die Schwerpunktfächer an Zürcher Gymnasien – ein Überblick appeared first on studypeak.

The post Änderung beim Gymnasium-Zugang im Kanton Zürich: Was bedeuten die Reformen? appeared first on studypeak.

A major change is imminent in the canton of Zurich: from the 2029/30 school year onwards, all Zurich secondary schools, including those offering only long-term programs, will have to accept secondary school students. However, these young people will not be transferring to existing long-term secondary schools, but to newly created short-term secondary schools within the same schools. This will allow students to transfer directly to any secondary school after the third year of secondary school, regardless of whether the school previously offered only long-term or short-term secondary education.

The aim of the reform is clear: greater equality of opportunity and a better distribution of pupils across different schools. However, not everyone welcomes the change, and many parents and young people are now asking themselves: what does this mean for me in concrete terms?

Long-term and short-term high school: What is the difference?

Until now, there were two ways to enter high school in the canton of Zurich:

Long-term secondary school: Entry after the 6th grade of primary school, lasts 6 years until graduation.

Short-term high school: Entry after the 3rd year of secondary school, lasts 4 years until graduation.

Some well-known schools (such as the Literargymnasium Rämibühl) were previously exclusively long-term secondary schools. Secondary school students were not able to apply there at all.

That is now changing. From 2029, all secondary schools in Zurich will also offer a short-term Gymnasium program, so that all young people will have the same choice of schools, regardless of whether they come directly from primary school or from secondary school (click here for the official announcement from the Canton of Zurich).

Why is the system being changed?

There are two main reasons for introducing the short high school program at all schools:

Uneven utilization: In the cities of Zurich and Winterthur, some short-term high schools are bursting at the seams, while some long-term high schools still have places available.
More fairness: Until now, the chance of getting a place at a high school often depended on where you lived. Those who lived near a long-term high school had to travel long distances after secondary school to find a suitable school.

The new regulations are intended to eliminate these differences. In future, students should have the same opportunities everywhere.

Differences in the curriculum and how they should be balanced

An important aspect of the reform concerns the level of performance. As reported by the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper, there are differences in the curriculum between long and short high schools, particularly in German, mathematics, and French.

To ensure a smooth transition for secondary school students, the canton is planning support courses in these subjects. These courses are designed to help fill gaps in knowledge and ensure that all young people with similar backgrounds can start high school on an equal footing.

These measures are also intended to break down prejudices, such as the idea that secondary school students are fundamentally weaker. In fact, many studies show that many young people only realize their potential in secondary school, when they develop more independence and motivation to learn.

Criticism: "Zurich is dismantling its elite high schools"?

Despite the positive goals, there are also critical voices. In the NZZ and on Inside Paradeplatz, some teachers and parents describe the reform as "the abolition of elite high schools." They fear that standards could fall if more students with different levels of prior knowledge are placed in the same classes in the future.

Others, however, expressly welcome the change. They see it as an important step toward greater permeability in the school system. After all, there are many young people who were not yet ready for the long-term secondary school program in primary school but who develop very positively in secondary school.

Studies show that children from educated families are more likely to transfer to the long-term high school. The short-term high school is therefore often seen as a second chance, which should now finally be open to everyone equally.

What does this mean for students?

For secondary school students, the reform primarily means more freedom. Starting in 2029, they will be able to apply to any secondary school regardless of the type of school, including those that were previously only long-term grammar schools.

This takes some pressure off the system because applications are spread out more evenly. At the same time, the challenge of preparing well for the transition remains. The requirements for high school entrance exams and starting in the short high school program remain high.

This makes targeted preparation all the more important, especially in the core subjects of German, mathematics, and French. Those who start preparing for the high school entrance exam early on can go into the admission process with confidence. At studypeak, you will find learning materials, exercises, and preparation courses specifically designed for both variants.

Implications for parents: What to consider

For parents, the reform initially means more options, but also new decisions. If all middle schools offer both types of high school, location becomes less important. Instead, other questions come to the fore:

Which profile (language, math, music) best suits the child?

Should the transition take place immediately after primary school or only after secondary school?

How can I support my child in a targeted manner without overwhelming them?

The canton of Zurich emphasizes that both paths to the Maturity Certificate will remain equivalent in the future. The aim is not to standardize students, but to ensure fair access opportunities for all.

What is changing for schools

For the schools themselves, the reform is a major organizational step. Existing long-term high schools must introduce new classes, timetables, and admission processes for secondary school students. The canton is planning a transition phase lasting several years in order to implement the change carefully.

Many teachers also see this as an opportunity: mixing primary and secondary school students could give rise to new forms of learning and teaching models, for example through more targeted support and more team teaching.

Conclusion: A reform with great potential

The Zurich high school reform is a milestone for the education system and is also sparking debate. It aims to make access to high school more equitable, reduce pressure to perform, and give young people more paths to a high school diploma.

Whether it achieves this goal depends on how well schools, teachers, and parents support the transition.

However, with good preparation, motivation, and support, there is a good chance that the reform will be a real win for everyone involved.

You've made it to high school, but now comes the probationary period. These months will determine whether you are allowed to stay. Many people underestimate this phase, but with the right tips you can master it.

Why is the trial period so important?

The probationary period at grammar school usually lasts one semester. During this time, the school checks whether you are really up to the requirements. So it's not just about individual exams, but about showing over several months that you can cope with the pace, the amount of material and the way of working at grammar school.

Important: Not only your knowledge is assessed, but also your attitude to learning. Organization, initiative and perseverance play a major role. This is precisely why the trial period is considered a key phase. It decides whether you are allowed to stay at the grammar school permanently.

Common mistakes - and how to avoid them

Many students fail during the probationary period not because they are not intelligent enough, but because they make typical mistakes. If you are aware of the following pitfalls, you can consciously avoid them and significantly increase your chances.

Poor time management

Many students underestimate how much more material they will have to deal with at secondary school. What was easily manageable in elementary school suddenly seems overwhelming here. Homework, exams and projects pile up. If you don't have a plan, you quickly end up stressed or put everything off until the last minute. This not only leads to a hectic rush before exams, but also to poorer results.

Tips for avoidance

Create a study plan: Divide up your week and plan fixed study times for different subjects.

Prioritize: Focus first on important exams or subjects you are unsure about.

Use small units: Learn regularly in shorter blocks rather than in hour-long sessions.

Just memorizing instead of understanding

In elementary school, it is often enough to simply memorize material. This no longer works at grammar school: exams are structured in such a way that you have to apply and link your knowledge. If you only "cram" formulas, definitions or vocabulary, you will quickly reach your limits.

Tips for avoidance

Really understand the material: For each topic, ask yourself: "Why is this so?" instead of just "What is the answer?"

Practice with examples: Calculate additional tasks, use grammar in your own sentences or explain contexts yourself.

Use visualizations: Mind maps, sketches or diagrams help you to see connections between topics.

Don't ask questions out of fear

Many students are afraid to ask questions in class or after the lesson because they think they might seem "stupid". This leads to ambiguities remaining and small gaps in knowledge accumulating, which can lead to poorer performance or frustration later on.

Tips for avoidance

Courage to ask questions: Every question is allowed - even the "simple" ones. Teachers expect you to think actively.

Prepare notes: Write down everything that is unclear during the lesson and clarify it afterwards.

Use small groups: Sometimes it is easier to ask questions in a learning group first before speaking to the whole class.

Too much perfectionism

Sometimes you want to be perfect in all subjects and tasks. Every homework assignment has to be flawless, every exam has to be solved in the best possible way. This can lead to you spending too long on details, checking tasks several times or putting yourself under pressure, even for small things. Perfectionism inhibits productivity and can lead to important tasks being completed too late or not at all.

Tips for avoidance

Set realistic goals: Accept that not everything has to be perfect. The important thing is that you make progress.

Prioritize tasks: Concentrate on what is really important instead of putting energy into unimportant details.

Accept mistakes as a learning opportunity: Mistakes are normal and help you to improve.

Underestimation of languages

While many high school students focus primarily on math, science or other favorite subjects, they neglect languages such as German, English or French. Language performance counts heavily towards the overall grade, and comprehension problems in texts can have an impact on many subjects. Those who do not practice languages enough only realize late on that there are gaps, whether in reading, writing or understanding more complex content.

Tips for avoidance

Practice regularly: Daily reading, vocabulary training or short writing exercises keep the level stable.

Practical learning: attempts to use language in everyday life, e.g. summarizing texts or practicing dialogues.

Recognize gaps at an early stage: Ask questions or use tools to clarify comprehension problems.

Fighting alone instead of getting help

Sometimes you try to tackle all tasks and problems on your own, out of pride or because you think you have to do everything yourself. This can lead to small gaps in knowledge remaining, insecurities growing and progress slowing down.

Tips for avoidance

Get support: Teachers, parents or older classmates can help quickly.

Use learning groups: Learning together facilitates understanding and motivates.

External aids: Learning platforms such as studypeak or targeted tutoring help to close gaps.

How to successfully master the trial period

The probationary period at grammar school can be challenging, but it is by no means insurmountable. If you understand the material, organize yourself well and seek targeted support when needed, you have a very good chance of successfully mastering this phase.

This is exactly where studypeak comes in: With the online probationary period course for short and long grammar schools, you can study flexibly from home, work on exercises and use learning videos - ideal for closing specific gaps and setting your own pace. For those who prefer direct exchange, the on-site course in Zurich offers the opportunity to discuss difficult topics with teachers and classmates and receive immediate feedback. Both courses are designed to give you a more structured and confident approach to the trial period.

With the combination of continuous learning and targeted support from studypeak, you can start the probationary period with confidence and significantly improve your chances at the Gymi.

Conclusion

The probationary period at grammar school determines your future path, but it is not an insurmountable obstacle. If you recognize and avoid typical mistakes, you will remain calm and focused. With a clear learning structure and support, for example through studypeak's online or face-to-face courses, you can master the probationary period with confidence and show what you're made of.

The post Häufige Fehler in der Gymi-Probezeit – und wie du sie vermeidest appeared first on studypeak.

The trial period at the Gymnasium can be quite stressful. Suddenly the material is more difficult, there's more homework and maybe even the first exams. But don't worry: you're not alone!

With a good study plan, you can bring order to your school day, keep an overview and become more confident step by step. In this article, we show you how to create your own study plan, including an example that you can easily copy.

Why a learning plan is crucial during the trial period

In the Gymnasium, you learn a lot of new things in a short space of time. If you just "learn as you go", it can quickly happen that you lose track or forget things. This is exactly why a study plan is so important.

A learning plan will help you with this:

divide up the material better: You know exactly what you need to learn and when - no last-minute stress before exams!

to keep at it: If you study regularly, everything will be much easier for you - that's a promise.

recognize your weaknesses: You will quickly notice which subjects are more difficult for you and can plan more time for them.

to have more free time: Sounds strange, but it's true! If you plan well, you have more time for hobbies, friends or simply relaxing after studying.

You need a good routine, especially during the trial period, and your study plan is your best helper.

How to create an effective learning plan

A study plan sounds complicated at first - but it's not at all. With a few simple steps, you can put together your very own plan. The important thing is that it should fit in with your everyday life and make learning easier for you.

Get an overview

First look at when you have school and what else is going on in your week: Hobbies, sports, music lessons or free afternoons. First enter these dates in a weekly schedule. This way you can see when you have time to study.

Schedule fixed study times

Now think about when you want to study. Ideally a little bit every day - for example 30 to 45 minutes per afternoon. That way, the mountain stays small and you don't suddenly have to do everything at once.

Tip:
It's better to study short lessons regularly than to study long lessons once and be totally exhausted.

Alternate the subjects

Math, German, English, Latin ... there are many subjects. So that it doesn't get boring, it's good to learn a different main subject every day. You can also incorporate difficult subjects several times a week.

Repeat what you have learned

The brain loves repetition! That's why it's best to take a moment each week to briefly go through the most important topics of the week again - on Saturday mornings, for example.

Stay flexible

Not every day runs perfectly - that's completely normal. So plan a little buffer time so that you can reschedule if something comes up. You can also adjust your plan every week.

Sample learning plan: Your learning week at a glance

Here you will find a learning plan that you can use in a similar way. The subjects are divided up so that you practise regularly but have enough time to switch off.

A learning plan will only help you if you work with it regularly. It's like a compass that shows you what to do next - but you can also adjust it if something doesn't fit.

Motivational tips for the trial period

Sometimes it's not so easy to motivate yourself to study, especially when you're tired or would rather be doing something else. This is completely normal. But you can make it easier for yourself with a few simple tricks:

Set yourself small goals

Instead of saying: "I have to know everything for math", try:
"Today I'm practicing 5 problems with fractions" or "I'm learning 10 new Latin words".
Such small goals are easier to achieve and you will quickly see that you are making progress.

Reward yourself

After studying, you can treat yourself to a break or a small reward, for example an episode of your favorite series or a short playtime. This makes learning easier and more enjoyable.

Make your learning space cozy

A quiet, bright and tidy workplace helps you to concentrate better. Some people also like quiet music in the background that doesn't distract them.

Learn together with others

Ask a friend if you want to study together or quiz each other. Learning together is often more fun - and you can support each other.

Record your successes

Make a note of what you have achieved or put a tick in your learning plan. This way you can see your progress and stay motivated.

Remember why you are learning

The trial period is an important time to show what you can do and to lay the foundations for the Gymnasium. The better you learn now, the easier school will be for you later.

The transition to grammar school is an important step that needs to be well prepared. You should have certain skills and knowledge to pass the Gymnasium entrance exam. These relate not only to your knowledge of school subjects, but also to your way of learning and how you organize yourself. In this article, you will find out which requirements are particularly important for the Gymnasium entrance exam and how you can best prepare for it.

General requirements for the Gymnasium entrance exam

To pass the Gymnasium entrance exam, there are some basic requirements that you should fulfill. These can be divided into three important areas: your subject knowledge, your methodological skills and your personal qualities. If you are well positioned in these areas, you have a good chance of passing the exam and making the transition to the Gymnasium.

Technical requirements

You should have a good knowledge of the most important subjects such as German, mathematics and a foreign language such as French. This means, for example, that you have a good command of spelling, grammar and understanding texts. In mathematics, you should be able to do basic arithmetic and solve simple problems well. This specialist knowledge is the basis for many tasks in the exam.

Methodological skills

It is also important that you learn how to approach tasks correctly. You should understand exactly what is being asked and be able to write down your answers in a clear and structured way. It is also important that you manage your time well during the exam and stay focused. These skills will help you to pass the exam successfully.

Personal characteristics

Finally, you should also work on your personal strengths. Exams can sometimes be stressful - so perseverance, calmness and self-confidence are very important. If you are motivated and believe in yourself, you will be able to cope well with difficult tasks and stay focused even under pressure.

Requirements by subject

The Gymnasium entrance exam primarily tests your knowledge and skills in math and German. Below you can find out what is expected of you in both subjects.

German

In German, you should above all show that you understand texts well and can read them correctly. You will have to answer questions about short texts and sometimes write short texts yourself. It is important that you have a good command of spelling, grammar and punctuation. Your expression and your ability to express yourself clearly and comprehensibly also play a major role.

Mathematics

Mathematics tests basic knowledge that you will need in everyday life and at school. This includes, for example, basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), fractions, percentages and simple geometry. You should also be able to understand and logically solve text problems. Mathematical thinking and working accurately are very important here.

Which students have the best chance of passing the Gymnasium entrance exam?

You're probably wondering which students have a particularly good chance of passing the Gymnasium entrance exam. Basically, it's those who prepare well, practise regularly and are able to organize themselves well. If you are confident in the most important subjects and know how to approach tasks step by step, you are on the right track.

Your attitude also plays a major role: if you stay motivated, believe in yourself and can deal with setbacks, you have a better chance of being successful. As already mentioned, concentration, stamina and the ability to remain calm are also important in order to master the exam with confidence.

In short: with good specialist knowledge, methodical work and a positive attitude, you too can successfully pass the Gymnasium entrance exam!

How to optimally prepare for the Gymnasium entrance exam

Good preparation is the be-all and end-all if you want to pass the Gymnasium entrance exam successfully. It's best to start strengthening your strengths and working on your weaknesses early on. Practice the most important topics in German and math regularly. It is also important that you learn to understand exam questions correctly and work on them systematically.

Use different learning methods: For example, you can solve exercises, go through sample exams and have difficult topics explained to you again in detail. This will give you confidence in dealing with the exam format and reduce stress.

On Studypeak, you will find a special Gymnasium entrance exam preparation program that provides you with targeted support. There are learning videos, exercises and exam simulations that are precisely tailored to the requirements of the Gymnasium entrance exam. If you are looking for even more individual support, our experienced tutors will be happy to help you. They offer on-site Gymnasium entrance exam preparation courses in Zurich and Küsnacht to prepare you specifically and personally for the exam.

Conclusion

The requirements for the Gymnasium entrance exam are varied and go beyond pure subject knowledge. In order to successfully make the transition to the Gymnasium, you should not only be well prepared in German and mathematics, but also have methodological skills and personal strengths.

With a good dose of motivation, regular practice and the right preparation, you can go into the exam with confidence and significantly increase your chances of success.

The post Anforderungen Gymiprüfung: Was muss ein Primarschüler für den Übertritt ans Gymi können? appeared first on studypeak.

Choosing the right type of school is very important for many families and students, as it has a significant impact on their future education and career path. When choosing between public and private Gymnasium in particular, there are various advantages and disadvantages that need to be carefully weighed up. The choice depends on personal needs, expectations of the education, and available resources.

Public secondary schools

The big advantage that public schools have over private schools is the financial cost. Public secondary schools are free of charge. Only school materials, school trips, and any special courses need to be financed. This offers a major advantage over private schools. It should also be mentioned that the quality of Swiss public secondary schools is very high. Recognition of the qualification is also guaranteed.

Private secondary schools

Private schools are more expensive, but they cater better to individual students. Classes are smaller, which promotes personal attention. In addition, their offerings, including extracurricular activities, are more diverse than those of public schools. However, modern teaching methods, high-quality learning materials, and well-qualified teaching staff come at a price. In addition, there are indoor and outdoor activities that need to be financed. The costs of a private school cover all these elements.

Special regulations for private secondary schools

When considering private schools, it is important to check whether the qualification obtained at the end is recognized. There are a wide variety of recognized private schools in Zurich. You can find an overview here: recognized non-state secondary schools. Furthermore, the schools have their own regulations regarding entrance exams and trial periods. Some do not require either, others only one, and still others have strict rules about who is admitted to the exam based on their grade point average.

Educational concepts and value formation

Some private schools place great importance on instilling values in their students. Philosophical and Christian-humanistic values play a role here. This can be enriching and appealing to some parents and students, but not to others. Some private schools also have different educational concepts, whereby students are encouraged to learn through practical and project-based teaching.

Conclusion

The decisive factor in the selection process is that parents and students obtain comprehensive information about the characteristics of each private school provider. Both concepts have their advantages and disadvantages.

The decision between a long or short-term Gymnasium program depends on the individual needs, abilities, and educational goals of each student. Both types have specific advantages and disadvantages that should be taken into consideration.

Long-term Gymnasium

The long-term Gymnasium lasts six years in the canton of Zurich. Schooling begins directly after the 6th primary class.

Advantages

Students benefit from early immersion in challenging subjects.

Students have the opportunity to build a stable community with their classmates over many years.

You don't have to get used to a new school after 2-3 years.

Students can choose any profile or specialization.

Disadvantages

Students must decide on this path after primary school, which can be challenging for some children and parents.

Starting early can lead to increased pressure and stress.

Short-term Gymnasium

Those who do not pass the ZAP the first time can try again in the second secondary level. The short-cycle Gymnasium begins after secondary school (usually after the 8th or 9th grade) and lasts four years until the Matura.

Advantages

Students and parents have more time to observe the child's academic performance and interests before a decision is made.

Students can better assess whether the Gymnasium is right for them or whether they would prefer to pursue an apprenticeship.

The pressure is not as high in the first two years of secondary school as it is at the long-term Gymnasium.

Disadvantages

The transition to a short-term Gymnasium can be challenging, as a higher level of performance and adaptability is expected.

The material must be covered in a shorter period of time, which can lead to a higher learning load.

Pupils cannot choose all profiles or specializations from secondary school.

Summary of advantages and disadvantages

Starting at the Gymnasium later gives you more time to make a decision, but it can limit your freedom to choose profiles and specializations, as many options are only available at the long-term Gymnasium. The long-term Gymnasium provides early support and stability, but it also comes with the pressure of having to make an early decision. You should therefore choose carefully to find the best educational path for your individual needs and goals.

Tips for choosing a school – What you need to know

Listen to your gut feeling when making decisions

With so many options available, it can be difficult to make the right decision. As a general rule, you should listen to your intuition or gut feeling when making a decision. It is often said that the decision your intuition makes is often the right one. The more you think about a decision, the more second-rate solutions you will come up with.

Listen to other experiences

It may also be helpful to hear other opinions about the decision. Perhaps you know someone who has already attended this cantonal school and would recommend it to you. It may also help to share your thoughts with others and talk about the decision.

Compare profiles and view schools

You might also want to think about what kind of profile you would like to study. This will allow you to see whether the cantonal school offers this profile. This can help you decide between schools. Generally speaking, you will have a feeling which one suits you best. It also makes sense to take a close look at the individual cantonal schools and find out what their focus is.
