The central entrance exam (ZAP) for the long-term Gymnasium is a crucial step for students who wish to pursue further education. But what requirements must be met in order to pass the exam? School allocation
In principle, free choice of school applies to secondary schools in Zurich. However, the final school choice cannot be guaranteed and therefore does not always result in the desired school allocation. Overcrowding may result in a different allocation, in which case you will be informed in writing.
Preliminary grade
If you are in a public 6th primary school class at the time of application will have theirprevious grades count towards the examination for a long-term Gymnasium. In all other cases, previous grades will not count. Previous grades are calculated as follows: The subjects German and mathematics each count half towards the grade obtained in the ZAP.
Examination subjects of the ZAP
The ZAP to a long-term Gymnasium comprises the exam subjects German and Mathematics and is a written exam. In German, the exam consists of two parts:
- Part I: "Writing a text" - Essay
- Part II: “Language analysis and text comprehension”
Exam grade
The exam grade is calculated as follows:
¼ Part I German exam, ¼ Part II German exam, ½ Mathematics exam

Overall grade
Candidates pass the exam with the following overall grades:
With the preliminary grade At least 4.75
Without previous grade At least 4.5

School entry
Passing the central entrance examination for the long-term Gymnasium entitles the candidate to enter the trial period in the following school year.
